Hospital Provision in Central South Hampshire

Letter sent from the Director of the Association to The Rt Hon John Hutton MP Minister of State for Health on 21 March 2005

This Association represents all 15 local authorities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight together with the Fire and Rescue Authority, Town and Parish Councils.  

At a full meeting on Friday 18 March the Association discussed the issue of hospital provision in central south Hampshire. The Association gave its unanimous support to the case made by Gosport Borough Council for retention of hospital facilities in the Gosport/Fareham area. We urge you to ensure that Haslar Hospital is retained for use by the NHS until such time as it is clear that there is adequate provision to replace it within the locality. We are extremely concerned about the state of hospital provision locally and cannot believe that you could allow the invaluable facilities at Haslar to be lost particularly in view of the escalating demand for hospital treatment across southern Hampshire.  

We understand that your meeting with Peter Viggers MP and Gosport Borough Council tomorrow has been postponed and we urge you to meet the delegation as soon as possible.
